Rewarding employees

It’s no secret that people respond well to appreciation. As an employer you can do this by expressing through recognition of your employees’ hard work. However, although it’s nice to receive extra cash in hand for hard work, it isn’t always the best reward. Read our top ten rewards that we implement at work for an employee/s who go above and beyond.

1. Praise

See or notice your employee exceeding in a task or job? Why don’t you take the time to let them know you’ve noticed and that you’re impressed, or you value the contribution they’ve made? By doing this you can instantly boost your employee’s confidence which in turn can encourage them to continue to over perform.

2. Recognition

Although your employee will appreciate you praising them, it would be even greater to do it in front of other employees to receive a greater reaction. This should also kick other employees into gear by creating a bit of a competitive edge so they can receive recognition too.

3. Responsibility

If one of your employees has continued to over deliver and provide quality work, why not give them a little extra responsibility around the workplace? Include them in on important meetings so they can have their say on how some aspects of the business is run. It isn’t a major role change but will help show your employee that they are valued and trusted.

4. Team activities

Although you work with your employees Monday to Friday (generally) it is nice to take the time to do activities that don’t involve work. Invite them out for a drink and steer clear of any work discussions or go out for lunch on their breaks. This will help build morale and will give everyone a better understanding of who they are working with.

5. Flexibility

If your employee is often going above and beyond, offer them flexible working hours. If they need to leave early to go pick up the kids, or have an important appointment, consider the overtime they work and reward them by letting them slip out early. Or, allow them to start early/finish late on another day to make up for lost work time.

6. Gamification

Our office loves a good Bachie (The Bachelor TV series) sweep! It’s a morning conversation starter, and we all compete to have our guy standing at the end, and a nice bottle of bubbles for the winner always goes down nicely. This creates good morale amongst the office and makes the work environment that much more enjoyable. And better yet – no cash involved to participate – everyone just gets allocated or lucky dipped their sweep… it means there is no opting in or out, just a bit of fun for everyone and they can then decide if they do or don’t want to contribute to the office banter surrounding the sweeps!

7. Work from home

Now this can be a tricky one. You have to have a certain level of trust to let your employees work from home, as you need guarantees that they’re going to actually be working. Once off occasions if their kids are at home sick or have a specialist appointment to attend? Perfect instance to allow your employee to work from home. Or trial a permanent one or two days from home and you may be surprised how much more they can accomplish due to being interrupted less by office chatter.

8. Wednesday Wellness

Every Wednesday our office focusses on ergonomics – stretches aimed to help our bodies recover from sitting at desks all day. Not only does this refresh our minds and relaxes our bodies, it’s also 30 minutes of catching up on social chit chat. By the time we sit back at our desks, we all feel much more limber and ready to conquer the afternoon.

9. Friyay's

This is a great one to create a level of excitement on a Friday that will encourage employees to get all their work done before they roll into the weekend. Maybe your employees often start early or take a shorter lunch break, why not reward this behaviour weekly by letting them knock off early in time for the weekend. Keep in mind your employees don’t always have to go above and beyond expectations, so if they do it on a regular basis they are contributing to the success of your business. Show them that it is appreciated and by them over performing, you will reward by a shorter workday.

Implement some of these changes and watch as your work environment soars and ensures employees skip into work each morning.
